A bridge on the Kali River, which connects Goa to Karnataka, collapsed in the early hours of Wednesday, disrupting traffic on Highway 66, according to officials. At the time of the collapse, a truck was crossing the bridge and fell into the Kali River. Fortunately, the driver was rescued by local fishermen who swiftly jumped into the river, as reported by a police official from Karwar, Karnataka.
The police official stated that the old bridge at Sadashivgad in Karnataka gave way around 1 am. This bridge, which had been in use since the new bridge was built a decade ago, was primarily used by commuters traveling to Goa. Following the collapse, traffic on the new bridge was halted temporarily during the early hours of Wednesday.
Later, the Karwar police reported that all vehicles, except for heavy ones, were permitted to pass through. Harish Raut Desai, in-charge of the Canacona police station in Goa, mentioned that traffic on the new bridge was restricted because Karnataka authorities were inspecting its stability following the collapse of the old bridge. He also noted that the Goa police were coordinating with their counterparts in Karwar to keep an eye on the highway situation.
